Uruguay captain Diego Godin has been awarded his country's highest sports honour by its national parliament.
Godin was given the Premio Jose Nasazzi-Obdulio Varela -- named after the captains of Uruguay's 1930 and 1950 World Cup-winning sides -- at a ceremony in Montevideo, and gave a speech which brought a standing ovation from the members of Uruguayan parliament in attendance.
"For me it is an enormous honour to receive this prize, for all that it means," the Atletico Madrid defender said.

"This does nothing more than strengthen my commitment and responsibility for my teammates, for football, for society and the children, who are the future of our country. Over and above sporting success, the important thing for me is to transmit values."
Godin, 30, also released a video statement afterwards, in which he said he was honoured to have received a prize named after the only two men to captain the nation to World Cup glory.

"Nasazzi and Varela were two great captains not just for sport, but for our country," he said. "This makes me redouble my commitment, my responsibility to keep up this legacy on and off the pitch to transmit the values which our society needs."
Godin, who made his international debut in 2005, has won 101 caps for Uruguay and was part of the squad which won the 2011 Copa America and finished fourth at the 2010 World Cup.
