Nashik: With the onset of October, migrant birds have begun flocking at the Nandur Madhyameshwar bird sanctuary. People have also gradually started trickling in to catch a sight of these winged visitors.
Situated in Niphad, around 40km from Nashik, the sanctuary is spread over 1,765 hectares at the confluence of the Godavari and Kadwa rivers and comprises evergreen forest and trees.
Bird watchers expect more birds in the coming month as this is migration season.
At present, flamingos, spoon bills, painted storks, marsh harriers, green bee eaters and a few ducks of the Gadwal variety are seen at the sanctuary.
Preeti Khairnar, a city-based student who visited the sanctuary last week said that she saw quite a few birds there. "There will be more next month. We generally go in November," Khairnar said.
Harsh Shah, an entrepreneur took his relatives to the sanctuary during the weekend for bird watching. "We were pleased to see many flamingos and other birds at the sanctuary. We know birds migrate during this season, but we weren't sure of seeing so many birds at the sanctuary," Harsh said.
The official guide of the sanctuary, Pramod Darade, said, "We have around 50 flamingos now and these numbers are likely to go up. Generally, we do not see these many flamingos at the start of the season."
He said that the water level of the dam had increased due to the rains but the birds perched on the jetties made for them.
