Girl killed in rash driving by deputy speaker's son

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu assembly deputy speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman's college-going son has been booked for reckless driving, leading to the death of an 18-year-old girl near Avinashi on Wednesday evening.
The car drove by J Pravin, 19, a first year fashion technology student in Coimbatore, rammed centre median, killing his classmate, who was travelling with him and four other friends in the vehicle.The deceased was identified as Surekha, 18, from Saibaba Colony.
Meanwhile, Pravin and others were admitted to a private hospital with injuries.
"She was thrown out of the car after the car collided against the centre median and died," the police said.
After hitting the median, Pravin's car also rammed another car that was coming from the opposite direction, leaving three of its passengers injured. Police said Pravin must have driven the car at a speed of 120kmph.
"We have booked him for causing death by negligence (IPC Sec 304 a), causing hurt by an act endangering life (IPC sec 337) besides rash driving,'' a police officer said.
It was a fun trip that turned tragic for youth, police say. According to the police, Pravin, his friend Tilak and four girls from his college were heading to Erode to visit a friend there. When the car reached Oothiyur near Perumanallur in Tirurpur district, Pravin lost control of the car.
"The car was travelling in such a high speed that it hit the median, jumped over it and rammed into a car coming in the opposite direction," said a police officer.
The car came to a halt only after moving further in the wrong side for about 50 metres, police said. Pravin sustained less injury than other passengers, thanks to the air bag. Surekha was flung out of the window but got trapped in the door. Her body was hanging out of the car when police reached the spot.
Tilak too suffered grievous injuries and all of them were rushed to a private hospital while the body of Surekha was taken to the government hospital in Tirupur. Nelson and two others in the car that was coming in the opposite direction escaped with minor injuries.
