Chain snatchers strike near India Gate

NEW DELHI: On Sunday afternoon, two men on a bike snatched a gold chain from a 32-year-old woman at the Rajpath-C Hexagon intersection when she was crossing the road towards India Gate lawns. The area has a police post nearby and has at least 50 CCTV ca meras.
In her complaint the woman said, she along with her husband had gone to India Gate for a stroll and were crossing the road when bikers stopped in front of her, snatched the chain worth Rs 2 lakh and disappeared towards the Hyderabad house.

The couple, from Hyderabad, tried to chase the bikers in an auto but in vain. “I asked the traffic police to help us but they instead pointed us towards a local policeman who was passing by ,“ the husband said. The couple then informed the PCR about the incident and was taken to the Tilak Marg police station.
“The cops told me that the CCTV camera at the junction did not have a recording device attached to it,“ added the husband.
The woman was taken for a medico-legal examination and was treated for injuries on the neck and a case of rob bery was registered.
She said the snatchers would be in their 30s, were wellbuilt and had helmets on. She was unable to identify the number of the two wheeler, police said.
The couple had come to the city for the first time and were out for sightseeing.
Several teams from district have been formed to trace the bikers using the footage from other CCTV cameras installed at the C-Hexagon.
