KOZHIKODE: The meeting of the city corporation held on Monday passed a resolution to kill violent stray dogs in accordance with the stand of the state and union government on the issue.
A resolution in this regard was passed unanimously at the council meeting when JD (U) councillor P Kishan Chand moved a propsal in the council seeking compensation to the victims of stray dog bits in the corporation.
He urged that the council should take steps to ensure anti-rabies vaccines and syringes in the hospitals since they are not available in many hospitals.
He urged the mayor to take steps to provide compensation to victims of dog bite.
UDF councillor K T Beeran Koya urged the mayor to earmark separate funds under the mayor relief fund to provide compensation. He said that the stray dog menace is a major issue in the corporation and councillors have been inviting the wrath of the public over the issue. Councillors cutting across party lines urged the mayor to take steps to put an end to the stray dog menace.
Adv PM Suresh Kumar of UDF recommended making modifications in the resolution urging to take steps to cull violent stray dogs.
The council also passed an adjournment motion seeking the immediate intervention of chief minister to ensure the entry of journalists in the High court to report court proceedings.
The council did not accord approval to more than 25 agenda items following model code of conduct due to the declaration of by-election in the Areekkad ward to be held on September 21.
