Centre files modification petition in SC on Cauvery: BJP energised
BELAGAVI: BJP, which has been on back foot with the reluctance of prime minister Narendra Modi to intervene into Mahadayi and Cauvery water disputes, looked energised on Monday, first day of the two day state executive meet of the party began here. The change in the mood has come, following the modification petition filed by central government in the supreme court taking exception on constituting Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
Leaders of the party looked trying to en-cash modification petition filed by the central government into SC to pass positive energy among party workers and using as weapon to corner of Congress led government in the state.
Party officially began preparations for the next assembly elections with the same stage.
State president BS Yeddyurappa, state in-charge and national general secretary Muralidhar Rao, law minister Sadananda Gowda and minister for commerce and industry Nirmala Sitaraman spoke and cornered Siddaramaiah government saying it has failed in handling Cauvery and Mahadayi water disputes.
Yeddyurappa said government has exhibited irresponsible attitude in handling Cauvery issue. Probably Karnataka is the first state that defied SC order twice. Government is sole responsible for emergence of such condition. Neither it argued strongly in SC nor heard suggestions of opposition to change counsellor Fali Nariman.
State president said he along with union minister Ananath Kumar, Sadananda Gowda, Ramesh Jigajinagi had met union water resource minister Uma Bharati and brought facts about the water availability in the dams of both states to her notice and requested to send the team of experts to check the same before taking any decision to release water. However, talks were failed as Tamil Nadu opposed the proposal, Yeddyurappa said.
Muralidhar Rao alleged government could have handled Cauvery and Mahadayi issues more sensibly. Generally, water is used for dousing fire but in Karnataka water turned into fire. Government has been indulged in making score against opposition rather focussing on issues state suffering by. As both issues in highest court, there are limitations for prime minister’s intervention. But, party stands firm in support of farmers and common man when the question of existence arises, he said.
Union drinking water and sanitation minister Ramesh Jigajinagi, MPs Suresh Angadi, Shobha Karandlaje, Prabhakar Kore, Pralhad Joshi, district BJP president Vishwanath Patil, MLAs Arvind Limbavali, Sanjay Patil and ex minister CM Udasi were present.
