NEW DELHI: Photographs of four rifles on a table at the Delhi University Students’ Union office that was surrounded by a dozen of youths, including the president of the body shared on social media, raised many questions on Monday.
The incident happened during a memorial service organised for DUSU president Amit Tanwar’s brother. Tanwar’s action was slammed by rival groups that said the students’ union office is a place to resolve issues and not to organise personal events and click photos with arms.

Tanwar said he tried to stop them from taking photographs and that the guns belonged to a security officer of a guest who came to pay homage to his brother.
“I said we should not click with the guns. You can see from the pictures I am not holding them. Thereafter, someone uploaded them without my knowledge,” Tanwar added.
On the reason for holding a personal event at DUSU office Tanwar said, “ My brother is known for his service in our village and has been an inspiration to many, including me. So to honour him, we organised the event.”
DU administration played down the incident. While no official agreed to comment, the dean of students’ welfare said, DUSU doesn’t come under him. The chief proctor, Satwanti Kapoor could not be reached for comments.
Rival groups have demanded a probe in the incident while NSUI have threatend to go on strike.
