WUHAN: Dominika Cibulkova reached and stretched in the final of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, she ran as only she can and tried to rise to the challenge, but she may as well have been in the stands, watching along with the 10,000-strong holiday crowd.
Saturday's title round clash was all about the powerful Czech Petra Kvitova, who came through 6-1, 6-1 in 62 minutes. Kvitova, 26, playing her first final in 2016, entered the week at No.
21 on the Road to Singapore leaderboard, but will now vault to no.11.
"Most of the time, how a match goes, depends on how I play, how I feel. I'm one of those types of players. Depends on the number of winners and unforced errors I'm making. The tough part for me has always been to find the balance between errors and winners," a relaxed Kvitova summed up her performance in Wuhan.
"How I played all week here has been amazing. It started with the match against Angelique (Kerber) in the round of 16. Today I was focused and was able to play my game. It helped that the roof was closed, that suited me," she said, beaming as she thanked the weather.
Sania-Strycova fall in final:
Third seeds Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova bowed 1-6, 4-6 to American Bethanie Mattek Sands and Czech Lucie Safarova in the doubles final.
The Indo-Czech pairing, who came together in August, now have a 14-2 win-loss record with two titles in Cincinnati and Tokyo besides the runner-up finish in Wuhan.
