Mick Schumacher misses out on German F4 title

Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael, has been beaten to the German Formula 4 title by main rival and former teammate Joey Mawson.

Schumacher, 17, headed into the final round of the season at Hockenheim 39 points behind Mawson, who wrapped up the championship with two races to spare by taking victory in the opening race of the weekend.

The Prema Powerteam driver needed to avoid dropping more than 10 points to the Australian in the first race to keep his title hopes alive, but suffered a blow when he was one of several drivers to be excluded from qualifying, while Mawson claimed a spot on the front row.

After winning the qualifying race from 14th, Schumacher -- in his second season racing single-seaters -- battled back from 22nd on the grid to finish sixth, although it was not enough to stop Mawson from sealing the title, after he passed pole-sitter Mike David Ortmann en route to recording his ninth victory of the season.

Schumacher could still end the year with a championship crown, if he can overcome a 25-point deficit to Marcos Siebert in the Italian F4 series finale at Monza at the end of October.
