Shah Alam Nayan, the organising secretary of Juba Dal's Savar Unit, was killed in a 'shootout' early on Saturday at Savar's Birulia, said Savar police OC SM Kamruzzaman.

Juba Dal is the youth front of the BNP.

Nayan was wanted on several charges, including, murder, abduction, manslaughter by arson, attack on police as well arms and drugs smuggling, said the police officer.

The victim's family said Savar police arrested Nayan on Friday from the capital's Mohammadpur area from his rented apartment.

"He was brought to the Savar police station, but we were not allowed to meet him. My mother saw police taking him away from the station around 9pm," said Nayan's brother Masud Alam Liton.

He said they came to know about Nayan's death in a 'shootout' on Saturday morning.

Police said they took Nayan along with them in raid to recover firearms.

"Around 2:45am, Nayan's accomplices ambushed the raiding team at Birulia. They opened fire forcing the police to retaliate. Nayan was hit in the cross-fire," said OC Kamruzzaman.

Nayan was taken to the local hospital where the doctors declared him dead, he added.

Police said they found a firearm, two rounds of ammunition and sharp weapons from the spot.
