NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Friday, condemning the recent terror attack in Uri, which resulted in the death of 19 soldiers. In a rare show of unity with the Centre, CM Arvind Kejriwal said this was not the time for internal squabbles and the country stood firmly together over the surgical strikes against Pakistani terrorists.
Kejriwal, who had promised a “major revelation” on Friday to show how that there was a huge conspiracy against the Delhi government to derail its work, said that not only the expose, but the entire assembly session would be postponed in the light of the recent developments.
The session had been called to discuss the chikungunya and dengue crisis in the city and saw only an hour-long discussion on the matter.
However, the passing of the resolution on the Uri attack and the surgical strike along the LoC did not go without AAP and BJP exchanging a few barbs. Minutes after Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia praised the Indian Army for its act, leader of the opposition Vijender Gupta sought an amendment to the resolution, asking for thanks also be given to the PM for the resolute action. He demanded that Kejriwal apologise for retweeting an article a few days ago, which said that instead of Pakistan, India had been isolated internationally over the Uri attack.
While Kejriwal did not apologise, Sisodia said: “It is not just the PM we should thank but also should congratulate the defence minister and others.”
The final resolution eventually read: “We congratulate the brave armed forces, chiefs of three services, the Prime Minister, ministers of home and defence, all other members of council of ministers and the people of the country for giving befitting reply to the enemy forces from across the border and for conveying stern message on behalf of our country and our people.”
Tourism minister Kapil Mishra said the surgical strikes were a welcome step. “It was the need of the hour. People were outraged by continuous terror attacks and inaction in this case would have been a let-down,” he said.
Labour minister Gopal Rai said the country had been reassured with this definite move. “There has been retaliation in the past as well but we have never found a solution to the problem of terrorism. Now that India has acted, there may be pressure from countries like the US and China. The country will have to decide whether to bow to pressure from them or to further India’s growth,” he said.
