See Mike and the Moonpies’ Autobiographical New Video for ‘Mockingbird’
Texas boot-stompers Mike and the Moonpies released one of the best albums of 2015 with the honky-tonking Mockingbird. A collection of honest-to-goodness country music, the record showcases their George Strait-influenced sound, bolstered by steel guitar and fiddle. It’s beer-drinking music, and unabashedly so.
And it’s in those very same beer joints and dancehalls throughout the Lone Star State where the band’s leader Mike Harmeier cut his teeth. In the new video for Mockingbird‘s title track, the album’s latest single, Harmeier recalls those early years via photos and home movies. It’s a touching video, full of unguarded images and poignant memories. The autobiographical song is just as much about Harmeier’s father as it is about him.
“‘Mockingbird’ basically explains why I am who I am and do what I do. My dad didn’t play music but has a wealth of knowledge about country music artists and through his involvement with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was able to rub elbows with a lot of our heroes,” says Harmeier. “Several have become friends over the years and were always around the house and the clubs he would take me to as a kid. I was as much influenced by him as I was by his social network and their lifestyle when I was growing up. I feel like I’m constantly chasing that feeling that I had when I was hanging out with him and his friends.”
True to their road-dog personas, Mike and the Moonpies are currently on tour, playing a string of shows throughout their home state and the Red Dirt region.
