INDORE: "Is this the reward for being nice," asked Kiran Rawat, looking at a garlanded portrait of her daughter, 16-year-old Priya, who was brutally stabbed to death by a Facebook stalker two days ago.
Priya's room is just as she left it, books on maths and science stacked neatly. Her father hasn't spoken since the murder. He and Priya used to run into each other every day because she had IIT coaching in the same building as his office.
"It's just because we are good people that our daughter suffered such a fate at the hands of a man who barely knew her," said Kiran.
"I will never be able to trust anyone."
SP-east Monika Shukla said on Thursday that the murder case will be tried in a fast-track court, in keeping with the family's wishes. It brings little solace to the family who wants the killer to be hanged. "Jailing him for life isn't enough," said a relative.
Relatives and friends have rallied around the family. They are shaken to the core.
Her aunt, Kavita Parasar, said, "Priya was such an innocent child. She was an introvert and we used to scold her, saying she needed to be bold and speak to people."
Looking at Priya's books, Kiran said, "How are we supposed to live alone? How will I forget the scene in the dining room? The night before she was murdered, I fed her food with my hands and she slept in my lap for a while. I never knew then that the moment would never come again in my life and that was the last time I was caressing my daughter."
Monika Goswami, Priya's aunt, shuddered when she recaled the horrifying scene. "I saw her struggle for three hours," she said. Priya's father is in shock. "We have given him medicines. He is not speaking to any of us. Kiran (who was also injured in the attack) needs to be in hospital but we brought her home so that she could be with her husband," said Monika Goswami.
