ST. LOUIS -- Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto departed Thursday night's game with the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth inning after sustaining a cut on his chin.

Sliding into second after leading off the inning with his third hit of the game, a double down the left field line, Votto was struck in the chin by Tommy Pham's throw.

Votto stood up after a brief delay with blood dripping from his face. After a short delay and consultation with the team's trainers, Votto was replaced by pinch-runner Tyler Holt.

Votto raised his average for the year to .324 with 28 homers and 92 RBIs. At the time of the injury, St. Louis led Cincinnati 3-1.
