AHMEDABAD: While passing by Shivranjani or the commerce college, one would definitely come across cars parked on the main road creating traffic congestion. Not only are vehicles parked on the road, but several commercial complexes have banned parking by visitors inside. Though there are some public parking facilities in the city, none seem inclined to use them.
On another side several big showrooms on CG road provide valet parking, but people choose to park only on the road.
“In case a traffic police team comes, the valet parking staff would immediately drive away the car, thus preventing them from getting towed or being locked,“ said the staff of a valet parking.
Cars parked on the main road eat up space.
“Near the HL Commerce College, one would find cars lined up on the road leading to traffic issues. Cars are parked even in front of the bus stand forcing bus passengers to stand on the main road,“ said Kishan Shah a trader in the area.“The college has a paid parking facility but no students park their vehicles there,“ he added. Rajesh Dangi a re sident of Bopal said, “I usually pass from Ramdevnagar to Nehrunagar for my office work. There are several traffic bottlenecks on my route. The first is near ISRO, where students of a school park their vehicles on the road leading to traffic jam.“

Parking will explode into a major conflict issue for Amdavadis in the coming years. It is high time that Ahmedabad put in place a stringent parking policy which regulates parking in residential and public areas. The city also needs to ban illegal parking on busy roads and at the same time the civic body should provide multi-storey parking facilities nearby. The wide CCTV camera network along important roads should also be used by traffic police to issue e-challans.
