Noida: A 22-year-old student of BMLT (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology) of Sharda University has been missing for the past one month. The student, Gunjan Sharma, had gone to the university on August 30 at her usual time but did not return home.
Gunjan used to live with her family members in Bhangel village. Gunjan’s father, Nepal Sharma, said the student had left for the university in the morning. “When she did not return home till late in the evening, we got concerned.
We tried to contact her on the phone but it was switched off. When we contacted the university we were told that she had returned some books in the library at 2.40pm and left the university premises after that,” he said.
The family registered a case of abduction against unknown people with the Knowledge Park police station on September 5. Members of Gunjan’s family suspect the role of her fiancé in her disappearance.
The family members said they had fixed her marriage six months ago with one Vikas Kumar, who lives in Haldwani village, Greater Noida, and runs a garment shop in the village. “She used to talk to him frequently over the phone. We had scheduled their wedding for November. We have no updates so far and are worried about her safety,” the woman’s father said.
When asked why the family suspected Vikas, Nepal Sharma told TOI that Vikas had sent some indecent messages to Gunjan’s mobile phone and also scolded her on some issues. “When Gunjan did not return home on that evening, we tried to contact Vikas. He did not receive our repeated calls. Initially, we did not suspect him, and believed that the girl would return,” he said.
Ashwini Kumar, SHO of Knowledge Park station, said the police investigated the call records of the student and her fiancé. “We investigated their call records but their locations were not found at the same place on that day. We interrogated the suspect but could not get any leads. We are investigating other phone numbers which were in her recent call history,” he said.

The family members have provided the mobile phone numbers and IMEI number of the student to police. The police have put the student’s mobile phone number under electronic surveillance but it is switched off since the day she went missing.
Kumar said police teams have been deployed in NCR and other areas based on the available leads in the case.
