'Star Wars: Battlefront's Death Star DLC Has An Absurd Amount Of Polish

This article is more than 7 years old.

Star Wars: Battlefront just received its most beautiful and immersive piece of downloadable content so far. This DLC has you taking down Star Destroyers, fighting Storm Troopers in the overly waxed halls of the Death Star and flying your way through the space station's trenches to the legendary exhaust port. The only real failing of the new Death Star DLC is that there isn't enough of it. That doesn't mean you aren't getting your money's worth, it just means they have a lot of good ideas that really require further expansion. Everything is so immaculately rendered that you feel like you are in the movies. DICE removed the ability to have helmet-less Storm Troopers which goes a long way in making the overall game feel more genuine. You can't encompass the joy of seeing dozens of storm troopers march against rebellion soldiers if all of the imperials have decided to go into battle without any headgear.

The first stage of the DLC requires you to either defend a Star Destroyer or take it down by blowing up shield generators and the bridge. There are now NPC fighters that can be unlocked, such as B-wing, Y-wings and the always overpowered Tie-Defender. If the Star Destroyer is destroyed, you move on to an invasion of the Death Star with new hero Bosk and Chewbacca. This is where the rebels are trying to save R2D2 from the clutches of the empire. R2 is also a playable character once you reach the droid, it is up to you to get to the docking bay with your rebel escort. Once the phase is complete the rebels try to go on the famous trench run on the Death Star where you can play as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader's Tie-Advanced, if you are lucky.

It is definitely a wish fulfillment piece of DLC. Being able to fly down the trenches of the Death Star as Darth Vader is pretty much a dream come true. Fighting around the Death Star isn't easy, but you can have a distinct advantage if you are great pilot. Also, the Star Destroyer match is great because you can weave around the ship, asteroids and other debris. I'd love to see more maps based on these mechanics. The Emperor in the relatively claustrophobic Death Star proves to be the most overpowered heroes in the game if you are willing to camp next to R2D2. The combination of royal guard spawning on your location, force lightning and dropping special items for your team lets you dig in and allow the rebels to come to you. The content will leave you wanting more, but that is a good thing and it is my favorite DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront so far.
