After Thakur lodged an FIR, on Wednesday, the D N Nagar police placed Surendra Vaidya and his wife Babita under arrest, and also took their minor daughter into custody.

According to the FIR, the alleged incident took place three months ago in the Vaidyas’ home in Shitaladevi Society on Link Road in Andheri West. The police said the video shows Mayawati Vaidya (75) suspended upside down from the ceiling fan with a sari tied to her leg. “Surendra and Babita had tied the elderly woman and had made their daughter record the act on a cell phone. The accused had also tied the victim’s mouth with a cloth,” said an officer from the D N Nagar police station.

Festive offer

Surendra, Babita and their daughter have been booked for molestation, assault and wrongful confinement. The couple has been remanded to police custody for two days, while the daughter has been sent to a remand home.

“Mayawati is harrowed after the incident and is afraid of any person who approaches her. She is living with other family members now,” Thakur said.

Thakur claimed that during her inquiries in the locality, she was told that Mayawati had been tortured over property. “She owns a few homes in Andheri and planned to bequeath them to the children of the accused’s brother. Surendra was not happy about it, and had been pressuring her to give him the property,” she claimed.

Dhanaji Nalawade, senior inspector, D N Nagar police station, said the reason for Mayawati’s assault was being probed.
