Thousands of students from various colleges affiliated with the Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) launched a massive protest against the varsity administration on Tuesday to focus on vital issues bothering them. Not in a mood to listen to the promises doled out by the university authorities, students expressed their anger, unabashedly...
Why wait until the protest
While a large number of students from various districts participated in the protest rally to make themselves heard, many students said the authorities generally wait till an issue snowballs into a major controversy.
“On number of occasions, we have raised issues like hygiene in canteens, parking related problems on campus with the university authorities, but they never take serious note of our concerns. This protest is a result of their negligence,” said Akansha Bobade, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru College of Arts and Science.
Delay in results
While issues like on-campus safety, strengthening of anti-ragging cell were part of the students’ agenda, it was the delay in revaluation results that was on top of their priority list. “I had appeared for the winter session examination of BBA third year in November last year, and I am still waiting for the results. I have no other choice than to protest like this to make my voice heard by a university that doesn’t take our concerns seriously. I am now thinking of dropping out of the college and taking admission in an open university,” said Sumedh Shende of Dr Ambedkar College.
Girls get vocal
A large number of girls turned out to participate in this protest rally. The most important demands of these students include parking issues and clean toilets on campus. “Months ago, almost 10 vehicles of students were torched on the hostel premises of Government Medical College and though, the college authorities took some measures like installing CCTV cameras on campus, the boundary wall of the college still needs to be fixed. Another issue that concerns every girl is —provision of clean toilets on campus, which is sadly lacking in so many colleges,” said Bhagyashree Sahu, an MBBS student of Government Medical College and Hospital.
