NYPD is questioning a suspect in connection with the explosion of a Bronx house that killed FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy.
Julio Salcedo Contrer, 34, was arrested Tuesday at his girlfriend’s apartment in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, by the NYPD for driving without a license,New York Post reported. After speaking to first responders after the explosion onWest 234th Street on Tuesday morning, Salcedo left town for New Jersey. Since then, he has been held as a fugitive from justice in the Bergen County Jail, Lohud reported. It wasn’t immediately clear when he would be extradited, but he is expected to face drug charges. FDNY and NYPD found pot plants on the second floor and basement of the house Salcedo rented, the Post reported. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on WYNC that there is a “strong indication it was a marijuana grow-house … with all the different equipment there that could have been the cause. “We’re obviously looking for everyone in addition to the one individual who has been apprehended,” he said. “We’re looking for everyone else who may have either involved or have knowledge of this site because we actually have to get to the bottom of what happened here. And we have to hold everyone involved responsible.” ATF spokesman MatthewMeyerson told Lohud that the agency is assisting NYPD and FDNY and that the cause of the blast has not yet been determined.
“It’s way too early to decide a cause,” Meyerson said. “They are starting the demolition work.”
The funeral for Fahy is set for Saturday at Annunciation Church, 470 Westchester Ave., Yonkers, according to FDNY. The wake will be held Thursday and Friday atFlower Funeral Home,714 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers.
