Kolkata gambling racket busted, 4 held

While Alok Basu (47) and Ajay Upadhyay (41) were nabbed from Cotton Street, Santosh Sharma (56) and Harshit Dhandhania (31) were picked up from Belur and Bagmari respectively, based on a tip-off.

Four people have been arrested in connection with an inter-state gambling racket operating through a customised web portal, police said on Wednesday.

While Alok Basu (47) and Ajay Upadhyay (41) were nabbed from Cotton Street, Santosh Sharma (56) and Harshit Dhandhania (31) were picked up from Belur and Bagmari respectively, based on a tip-off. According to police sources, the gamblers had created an online lottery portal called ‘Kubermatka.mobi’ to get access to people outside the state. Investigations revealed that the illegal online lottery, which has been flourishing in Kolkata, has strong links with kingpins in Mumbai, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha as well.

“We have recovered several documents, mobile phones and betting money worth Rs 6.39 lakh in cash from the gamblers,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Akhilesh Chaturvedi told The Indian Express. The four have been arrested under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) of IPC and Gambling Act.

The online portal being used by the accused had the tagline, “Sirf ek game badlega apki zindagi (One game can change your life). The accused had their main office in Burrabazar area.
“During interrogation, the accused have revealed many names. Hopefully, we will be able to trace all the people behind this racket soon,” said an official.

The Bidhannagar Police on Tuesday arrested four robbers and drug dealers following a raid near Lalkuthi Bridge in Dumdum Park police station area of Lake Town. Those arrested have been identified as Ranjan Das alias Rahul, Ashit Mondal alias Bubai, Suvrajit Nayak and Ajit Chakraborty alias Buro. While Dhal and Nayak are originally from Cuttack, Mandal is a resident of Harijan Pally and Mukherjee is from Bally in Howrah. They were arrested under Sections 20B and 29 of the NDPS act, and Sections 25, 27 and 35 of the Arms Act. According to sources, 28 kg of ganja, three single-shooter improvised firearms with three 8mm bullets, one country-made firearm with 7 mm ammunition and two motorcycles were also recovered.
