Blackberry is said to be shutting down its phone business after 14 years of making handsets.

The company’s devices were once top choices for professionals as it provided on-the-go access, but the company has been struggling to keep up with other producers as mobile phone users now prefer android enabled touch screens.

The Canadian company has decided to focus on making software.

According to John Chen who is the company’s Executive Chairman said: “We are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirement and enhance return on invested capital.”

John Jackson, an analyst at IDC, said Blackberry’s decision to stop making devices was “entirely sensible and probably overdue”
