Kashmir unrest: Over 7,000 civilians, 2400 CRPF injured in stone pelting since July 8

A young girl died during the stone pelting in Srinagar on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Fozia, along with her sister was hit by a SUV moving backwards after it faced heavy stone pelting by a mob.

The stone pelting has had serious repercussions on both civilians and security personnel since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen.

While more than 7,000 civilians died during the recent unrest in the Valley, as many as 2400 CRPF men have been injured, 122 of them grievously.

83 DAYS OF UNREST

As per CRPF internal record 1321 incidents of stone pelting have taken place in the last three months in Kashmir valley.

The danger of stone pelting is worse when petrol/acid/kerosene bombs are lobbed along with stone. The strike rate is higher in these cases. As per an internal figure available with CRPF. Forty-three CRPF men have been injured in 43 reported incidents.

Speaking on such incidents, a top official in the force said "The stone pelting incident is being compared to 2010, is turning out to be much worse in comparison. Our soldiers are coming back with grievous injuries. One of our assistant commandants is being treated in Chennai for grievous eye injury."

Stone pelting incidents have been used by militants to lob grenade at the force by taking cover from the crowd. CRPF has also reported incidents of stray firing from the crowd targeting the security forces.

As many as 117 mob attacks on Security Force camps and Police Stations with intention to loot weapons have also been reported.

According to the force, the CRPF personnel are using maximum restraint to control the crowd using Tear smoke and less lethal weapons.

Facing the flak for using pellet guns, which resulted into more than 180 cases of severe eye injuries, security forces now use Tear smoke Shells fired, Tear Smoke Grenade, Rubber Bullets , Multi Button shells, Plastic Pallets, Stun grenades, 3 way grenade and chilli grenades as non lethal measures to deal with civilian protestors.

Since killing of Burhan Wani on 8th of July:

  • No. of Stone pelting incidents- 1321
  • No. of CRPF personnel injured in Stone Pelting -2400
  • No of CRPF personnel injured in other incidents - 144
