The Mindy Project” is coming to cable: Syndication rights to the Mindy Kaling comedy have been acquired by Viacom’s VH1 and Disney’s Freeform, via a pact with NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution.

In an unconventional arrangement, Hulu will continue to hold subscription-streaming rights to all five seasons of the single-camera comedy, with the 14-episode fifth installment of “The Mindy Project” set to debut on the service starting Oct. 4.

Under the syndication pact, VH1 and Freeform will begin airing episodes from the first four seasons of the show in October, and those also will be available on VH1 and Freeform apps. Season 5 of “The Mindy Project” will become available to the cablers one year after their premiere on Hulu; the first seven will be released weekly on Hulu this fall, with the second half to arrive in the spring of 2017.

“We are pleased that VH1 and Freeform recognize the value of ‘The Mindy Project’ for their viewers,” said Frances Manfredi, president of NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution. “VH1 and Freeform are great partners and ‘The Mindy Project’ will be a great addition to their strong programming.”

Hulu last year picked up “The Mindy Project” for season 4, with a 26-episode order, after Fox canceled the show. Hulu previously had been the exclusive streaming home for the first three seasons of the show via library deal with NBCU announced in April 2014.

“The Mindy Project,” produced by Universal Television in association with 3 Arts Entertainment, is created by and stars Emmy-nominated writer-producer Kaling as a skilled OB/GYN navigating the tricky waters of both her personal and professional life. The series also stars Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz, Adam Pally, Beth Grant, Xosha Roquemore, Fortune Feimster and Zoe Jarman. “The Mindy Project” is executive produced by Kaling, Howard Klein, Matt Warburton, Charlie Grandy and Michael Spiller.
