NHAI finalizes the Dhaula Kuan underpass plan
NHAI had shortlisted two plans for this project.
GURGAON: Relief is underway for the three lakh commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurgaon everyday. The highway authorities have finalized the plan for Dhaula Kuan underpass. National highway authority of India (NHAI) will construct an underpass for the traffic heading towards the cantonment area.
NHAI had shortlisted two plans for this project and they were sent to the independent consultant.

The first option was to construct an underpass for Gurgaon bound traffic so the vehicles towards Millennium city and those headed towards the defence area will be segregated before the signal. The other alternative was to build a four-lane underpass for Delhi-bound traffic coming from Gurgaon and Dwarka, and that was to be connected to AIIMS in Delhi.
After the inspection, the independent consultant has concluded that a two-lane underpass should be built for Gurgaon bound traffic at Dhaula Kuan-Cariappa Marg crossing (which turns towards Janakpuri). This will decongest the Dhaula Kuan traffic signal and improve the speed of the traffic. Once the underpass is completed, only the traffic heading towards Cariappa Marg and Parade Road will halt at the Dhaula Kuan traffic signal. While, the Gurgaon bound traffic will use the underpass.
Sources reveal that the feasibility report states that this side of the underpass has more vehicles. Therefore, an underpass is needed more on this side. The reason being that vehicles from Moti Bagh, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place, AIIMS, Janak Puri etc use this route to go to Gurgaon. While, traffic often deviates towards outer ring road near Munirka, thus a lesser volume of traffic reaches Dhaula Kuan from Gurgaon.
