India bound cars have performed poorly in crash tests in recent times, which all of us know. Even the Renault Kwid performed poorly in crash tests by the Global NCAP only last week.
Joining the list of poor safety tech cars are the Datsun GO, Tata Indica and the Vista. The tests were conducted by the Automobile Association in South Africa. India-spec cars were subjected to the test by the African agency.
The crash tests have been conducted for the Entry Level Vehicle Safety Report for which the Datsun GO, Tata Indica and the Vista have been subjected to. And the Association has conducted these tests to highlight the need for improved safety.
Since entry-level buyers try to make the most affordable purchase, almost all of them hesitate to shell out the extra buck required for safety equipment. So, the Automobile Association conducted the tests to emphasize the need for safety, while having them give less importance to the price tag of the car.
Out of the three cars, both the Datsun GO and the Tata Vista failed crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP and the ASEAN NCAP already, respectively. The failure in both these cases has been attributed to the absence of airbags for both the driver and passenger in the front seats.
The Datsun GO, Indica and Vista scored poorly that they were classified underpoor safety, out of the three classifications of Acceptable, Moderate and Poor Safety. Inda-spec cars getting classified under “poor safety” is due to the absence of airbags, ABS, EBD, etc.
When the Indian Government makes Airbags and ABS mandatory for all cars in India, these ratings are sure to improve. Carmakers in India have also been taking similar efforts to improve the safety rating of all their cars.
