AHMEDABAD: Two days after a mass wedding of the Chhipa community at Char Maliya area in Vatva had created a controversy, as participants robbed goods meant for newlyweds, the body of the organizer was fished out from the Sabarmati river near Jamalpur on Tuesday. Vatva police have registered a complaint for the incident on Sunday.
On Sunday, Rafiq Chhipa, a resident of Vatva, had organized a communal wedding function.
Chhipa has been doing so for the last 15 years, by collecting donations and presenting gifts to the newlyweds to promote mass weddings and avoid extravagant functions for lower middle class families.
This year, however, the organization was mired by a number of problem. This began with one of the couples questioning the cost of the goods provided and the donations received, claiming that Chhipa was pocketing money.
"The family members said that Chhipa was disheartened by the turn of events and allegations. Those who did not get goods as promised also mounted pressure on him. This may have led him to end his life. However, the probe is on," said a police investigator.
