Madurai: A history-sheeter hailing from South Gate in Madurai City was hacked to death by a gang on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mahamuni, 47, son of Padmanaban from Chinnakadai in South Gate. "Mahamuni used to take up odd jobs like painting and sculpting work. He often involved in criminal activities along with a local gang. They used to extort money from shopkeepers in the area.
A few cases were pending against him in South Gate Police Station," a police officer said.
Mahamuni was hacked to death by a gang, which came in motorcycles and intercepted him near Veeraragava Perumal Temple.
"Attempts to escape from the gang went in vain and he was hacked at the same spot. The incident took place around 11.30pm. Though he was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, doctors declared him brought dead," the officer told TOI.
There was a dispute between Mahamuni and another gang led by Balamurugan from South Masi Street in connection with an extra-marital relationship, the officer added.
