The Department of Traffic Engineering and Safety at the General Directorate of Traffic will implement a number of road projects in Doha, including 19 interchanges on Al Shamal road.
A number of other projects will also be undertaken on the outskirts of the city to ease traffic congestion, said Brigadier Mohamed Marafi, director of Traffic Engineering and Safety Department at the General Directorate of Traffic under the Ministry of Interior.
The projects, which will be undertaken in cooperation with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), aim to facilitate free flow of traffic by building alternative roads and expanding existing roads.
Marafi said traffic on the bridge connecting Duhail Road and Shamal Road has resumed in both directions."The bridge has shortened the distance by nearly six kilometres, helping vehicles coming from the North," he added.
One of the 19 interchanges planned on the Shamal road will be at junction 5, connecting Duhail Street to Shamal Street in the direction of Doha.
Marafi said once the new roads and bridges are handed over to his department, it will supervise the traffic on these roads.
Marafi added his department is responsible for assessing the traffic flow as well as taking corrective measures for engineering errors that may impede the smooth flow of traffic.
"Before allowing traffic on any of the new roads, intersections and bridges or tunnels, the department evaluates the designs and the maps of the projects. It will propose exits and entrances to facilitate free movement of vehicles and reduce bottlenecks. On completion of the projects the department will check engineering works before opening them for traffic," He added.
Marafi expressed satisfaction over the success of the recently-completed roads and bridges projects. These projects provide great service to vehicles and pedestrians as envisioned by the Ministry of Interior, he added.
