Passenger train's engine catches fire, none injured

Hundreds of passengers were stranded for more than two hours on Tuesday after the engine of a passenger train caught fire near Morappur here.

Dharmapuri: Hundreds of passengers were stranded for more than two hours on Tuesday after the engine of a passenger train caught fire near Morappur here. The fire was put out immediately and no one was hurt in the incident.
The train, bound for Erode, left Jolarpet in Vellore district on Tuesday at 6am with more than 900 passengers. When the train reached near Morappur in Dharmapuri district around 8am, thick smoke emanated from the front engine.
"The loco pilots stopped the train about 500m away from the Morappur railway station," said a railway official.
He also confirmed that no one was injured in the incident as the loco pilots put out the fire immediately using fire extinguishers.
Meanwhile, officials at Morappur railway station informed Salem railway officials and also nearby railway stations about the incident. Subsequently, train services on Salem-Chennai railway track was stopped for a while.
After replacing the engine, the train reached Salem around 10am, railway official added. The train usually arrives in Salem around 8.30am. But on Tuesday, it was delayed by 1.30 hours.
