The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday made it clear to the Union Home Ministry that in case it fails to take final decision regarding the proposal of UT Emloyees’ Housing Scheme by October 18, the department’s joint secretary shall remain present in the court for explanation.

The directions came from a division bench comprising Justices AK Mittal and Ramendra Jain on a petition filed by the Chandigarh administration employees in 2013. Phool Kumar Saini and other employees had approached the High Court seeking directions to the Chandigarh Housing Board to implement the Self-Financing Housing Scheme, 2008 on a leasehold basis for 99 years. Meanwhile, a central government counsel had informed on August 22 that the Home Ministry had approved the proposal sent by the Chandigarh administration on March 10 this year.
