Lanka Restrictions

All restrictions based placed on about 10,000 people in 1971 in Sri Lanka will be revoked with effect from October 1, announced Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. The file on all security and legal measures taken by the government to deal with the youth revolt will be closed. The island-wide insurrection took a toll of about 1,400 lives and caused damage to the state to the tune of Rs 400 million and put the economy of the country back by 10 years, according to official estimates. Bandaranaike’s decision removes all surveillance and restrictions on the movement of 3,500 persons who pleaded guilty to having taken part in the insurrection and on whom suspended sentences of imprisonment had been imposed by a special commission of five Supreme Court judges.

Terrorists Hanged

Three Palestinian terrorists were hanged and left dangling in their nooses before a large crowd in front of the Damascus hotel. The three bodies, clad in white tunics, swung from wooden gallows facing the hotel for six hours. The terrorists had held 90 inmates of the hotel hostage and killed four of them. An official statement said the guerillas were sentenced to death by the state’s higher security court. “The criminals received the punishment they deserved,” it said.
