The Gurgaon police rescued two Punjab-based businessmen — Aakash Deep (25) and Vikas (24) of Panniwali in Fazilka — kidnapped from IGI Airport yesterday.

They were rescued following an encounter with the kidnappers in which one of them was injured.

“We have got one of the accused, though two escaped. Our prime motive was to rescue the hostages safely, which we did in collaboration with the Rohtak and Fatehabad police. We will nab the other accused soon,” said Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.

The victims had reached the airport at 9.30 am to drop Aakash Deep’s wife. When they reached the Gurgaon-Jhajjar border on their way back around 12.30 pm, one of them called home informing that they would reach in three-four hours, but within an hour the family got a call from the same number that they had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of Rs50 lakh.

Sumit Godara of Fatehabad, Aakash Deep’s brother-in-law, approached the Gurgaon police last night who booked the unknown kidnappers. The police formed a special team, led by Sumit Kuhar, DCP (Crime).

The Gurgaon police traced the call to Rohtak this afternoon and started a rescue operation. The police accompanied a relative of the businessmen with money to Gandhra Mod in Rohtak. One of the kidnappers came there in the businessmen’s car. The relative asked him to let him see the victim first. The kidnapper grew suspicious and opened fire.

The police returned fire, injuring the kidnapper. He told the police that the businessmen were in another car with his two accomplices. The hostages were rescued after an hour, while the two accomplices fled the spot. The injured kidnapper is at the PGIMS, Rohtak.
