How one tiny rule change has made the NFL have less injuries than it used to on the injury report

Correction: An earlier version of this post mischaracterized how the NFL reports injuries each week.

A cursory glance at a weekly injury report would have you believe the NFL is much safer in 2016. Teams listed 193 players on the injury report in Week 3. In 2015, that number was 325. In 2014, it was 328.

Are players healthier this season? Of course not. The reduction in reported injuries on the injury report has nothing to do with the league’s focus on player safety. It’s been brought on by a minor administrative rule change that you probably missed while enjoying the last few days of your summer.

Here’s the league’s explanation of the change, via USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero:

In early June, the competition committee approved several changes to the policy — most notable, the elimination of the “probable” designation on the game status report that had been used for players who had a virtual certainty of being available for normal duty in that week’s game.

Instead, if there is any question about the player’s availability for the game, the league says he should now be listed as “questionable” on the status report, which previously meant a player had a 50% chance of playing. If the player is certain to play, he is to be removed from the report, with the club required to provide an explanation to the league and subject to possible discipline if that player ends up being deactivated.”

Dropping the “probable” category has done more than just reduce the clutter on the league’ injury report, though. The actual effect of the change is that we no longer hear about all of those nagging injuries the same way we did in past years.

Case in point: Russell Wilson, who was dealing with a high-ankle sprain, was not on the Seahawks’ Week 2 injury report. Instead, Wilson’s injury and status was listed on the practice reports that are released during the week.
