Clippers Reinforce "Understaffed" Basketball Operations Department With 18 Additions

The Clippers on Friday unveiled a "major bolstering" of their basketball operations staff with multiple additions, which are "exactly the kind of changes the Clippers needed to make to try to take the next step as a franchise," according to Dan Woike of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. Clippers President of Basketball Operations and coach Doc Rivers said, "Our goal is not just to be the best team; it's to be the best organization." In addition to adding two new assistant coaches, the team "rounded out an infrastructure that was lagging behind the rest of the league -- one of the few remnants of the [former Owner] Donald Sterling era." Rivers: "In every department, we were understaffed. ... I thought we made do with what we had and did a pretty damn good job of it, knowing that if we get help, we can do a better job." The Clippers got the go-ahead to "add reinforcements across the board, bulking up a thin scouting department, adding a performance scientist/biomedical analyst and a sports performance psychologist" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 9/26). John Welch and Pat Sullivan joined the coaching staff as assistant coaches, while Dee Brown comes on as Dir of Player Programs. The following are other staff additions (Clippers).

* Johnny Rogers as Dir of Pro Player Personnel
* Ross Flowers as Dir of Sports Performance Psychology
* Mark Simpson as Dir of Performance
* Robert Picker as Dir of Team Security
* Jay Porterfield as Performance Scientist/Biomedical Analyst
* Paul Hewitt, John Loyer and Monte Mathis as pro scouts
* Darrel Johnson and Donnie Jones as college scouts
* Chris Holguin as Assistant Video Coordinator
* Ashton Williams as Assistant Equipment Manager
