ISRO to celebrate World Space Week

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ISRO centres here including Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre and ISRO Inertial Systems Unit will jointly celebrate the World Space Week from Oct 4 to 10 with programs for the public and students. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan is expected to inaugurate Space week celebration at Kanakakunnu palace on Oct 1 at 4.30 pm, beginning with an interactive session for students with scientists.The theme for this year’s celebration is `Remote Sensing Enabling our Future’.
An Inter-school quiz competition is also planned on Oct 1 at Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode concurrently.
Interestingly, children from tribal schools of Wayanad and Kottur at Kattakada will also take part in a familiarisation program for selected school students of Kerala In association with state education department at VSSC on Oct 5.
As part of the celebrations, ISRO scientists will be visiting academic institutions and delivering lectures. Interested institutions can register for this online. The programme will be inaugurated by VSSC director K Sivan at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mahi.
A Space Expo is planned at Ernakulathappan grounds at Kochi for a week from Oct 4. The expo will showcase various missions of ISRO and societal applications of Indian space programme. Entry will be free for all. The expo will be formally inaugurated by ISRO former chairman K Radhakrishnan.
An Open House program will be held for three days from Oct 4 at VSSC. Public can witness rocket launch at 11.45 am on Oct 4 and Oct 6, and at 2.45 pm on October 5. One member of the group has to carry a valid identity proof.
A program for senior residents of the city will be held at VSSC here on Oct 6. The program will be based on prior registration and will facilitate senior residents to interact with VSSC scientists and witness rocket launch and visit the Space Museum.
