Duchess Kate stuns in modern red midi dress

Talk about a royal quick change.

In Canada on Monday, Duchess Kate swapped her casual daywear — a safari jacket and skinny jeans — for a stunning scarlet Preen gown.

It was Kate's dressiest look she's shown off so far on the royal family's eight-day tour of western Canada. After a day touring Bella Bella and the Great Bear Rainforest, the duchess donned the modern red dress for a diplomatic reception Monday evening in Victoria, B.C. She complemented the look with red pumps, her shiny brunette locks swept up, and additional sparkle provided by the Queen's diamond Maple Leaf brooch.

Royal watchers noted that the off-the-shoulder dress was a fashion-forward choice for the duchess (Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Jessica Chastain are all fans of the British label).
