PATNA: Allaying people's apprehension in the backdrop of Siwan strongman and former RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin's release from jail on September 10, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Monday said the rule of law is his government's USP and he is fully committed to maintaining it in the state at any cost.
"I want to assure people that this government will not compromise on the issue of law and order whatever may be the result.
Law will take its own course and rule of law will prevail," CM asserted while addressing the JD(U)'s state council meeting at Rabindra Bhavan here.
He said there are certain elements in the society who try to instigate people on any issue. The JD(U) workers should be alert against such elements and take necessary steps to thwart their nefarious design to create differences in the society.
"If rule of law is this government's USP, maintaining social harmony is the identity of JD(U). The party will continue to maintain its identity by ensuring peaceful coexistence of different religious groups in the society," Nitish, who is also the JD(U) national president, said.
He said Bihar, in recent years, didn't witness any communal riot of serious nature. "Still, you will have to be cautious and extra alert. The season of festivals like Durga Puja, Muharram and Diwali is coming. Antisocial elements may try to create tension by spreading rumours," Nitish cautioned the party workers and asked them to keep sending their feedback to the state government on the law and order and social harmony issues.

Speaking on the health of alliance with Lalu Prasad's RJD and Congress, Nitish Kumar said he takes necessary care to ensure proper respect to each ally. "I respect the basic tenets of coalition and take advice from coalition partners with honesty. I take advice from senior leadership of each alliance partner on any big issue and policy matters," Nitish said, adding even when the BJP was with the JD(U), they had no grievance on the issue of partnership.
Earlier, the JD(U) state council ratified the re-election of Bashishtha Narayan Singh as the party's Bihar president. In another resolution unanimously passed at the meeting, the state council authorized Singh for nominating delegates for the JD(U) national council as well as constituting the state executive body.
Former JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav, national general secretary RCP Singh, all JD(U) ministers, majority of MPs and legislators from Bihar and leading party functionaries were present at the meeting. They congratulated Bashishtha on his unanimous re-election as the state party president.
