oung shuttlers Jonatan Christie, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Ihsan Maulana Mustofa entered the semifinals of the 2016 National Games on Monday, in what is slated to be a tight competition in their quests for the men’s singles gold medal.

The three best friends and national athletes outclassed their respective opponents in the badminton quarterfinals at Bima Indoor Stadium in Cirebon, West Java.

Jakarta’s Jonatan beat host Setyaldi Putra Wibowo of West Java in a straight match, while West Java’s Anthony beat Riyanto Subagja of Central Java. Central Java favorite Ihsan defeated West Java’s Abdul Kholik.

Jonatan, ranked 23rd in the world, took advantage of his opponent’s fatigue to come out on top.

“[Setyaldi] played a number of matches during the team competition. He also played two matches before [today’s run]. [His fatigue] contributed to my victory,” Jonatan said as quoted by Antara.

For Tuesday’s semifinals, Jonatan is set to take on Anthony, while Ihsan will face East Java’s Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo, a former national athlete who left the national camp in mid-2014.

Anthony said he would not underestimate Jonatan.

“I will try to enjoy the match. Hopefully, it will lead me to another victory,” he added.

In cycling, veteran Samai of Yogyakarta won a gold medal in the men’s team sprint at Munaip Saleh Velodrome in Cimahi, along with teammates Fatahillah Abdullah and Muhammad Nur Fathoni.

It is the last gold for Samai, as he plans to retire as a professional cyclist.

“I’m enjoying my sweet ending — winning a gold medal on my final day as a cyclist. It is also a historical win for the Yogyakarta team,” said the 38-year-old, adding that he plans to become a coach.

Indonesia’s favorite sprinter Samai said he would start his coaching career with the PGN cycling team.

In track and field, Jakarta will likely finish the Games as the sport’s overall champion, as on Monday evening it collected 14 gold medals, three silver and one bronze. Track and field has four remaining events, which will take place on Tuesday (men’s and women’s 20-kilometer walk) and Wednesday (men’s and women’s full marathon).

Jakarta will rely on national athlete Triyaningsih, who will participate in the marathon. She currently holds the national record with a time of two hours, 31 minutes and 49 seconds.

In the medal tally, West Java still leads with 177 gold medals, while East Java is in second (107) and Jakarta in third (104).
