Mysuru Civic body backs govt resolution on Cauvery
MYSURU: The special council meeting of MCC convened on Monday decided to request the state government for 4.5 tmc of drinking water for Mysuru city till June 2017.
The council endorsed the resolution adopted at the special session of the Karnataka legislature on Cauvery water. Mayor B L Bhyrappa announced the council's resolution: "MCC special council supports the resolution of the legislature session."
People's representatives expressed their opinion on the Cauvery issue.
Corporator Purushotam said river water is a national asset, and the Union government should distribute it equally, failing which conflicts will arise.
Former mayor Ayub Khan said law and order in riparian states went for a toss because of recent clashes. "The Prime Minister is yet to intervene in the issue," he said, much to the chagrin of BJP corporator Girish Prasad, who objected to the remarks. "His statements are political in nature. The council is meeting here to support the state government's resolution," Prasad said.
Senior corporator H N Srikantaiah explained the water disputes in other states. He urged the Prime Minister to intervene and resolve the issue.
MLA Vasu said: "If the state government releases Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Mysuru will face serious drinking water problem."
MCC should prioritize conserving Kukkarahalli Lake, which was once a major drinking water source. "It's polluted now," one of the corporators said. tnn
