MBABANE – Swaziland was honoured in London, England during an epic performance by Sipho ‘Big Fish’ Makhabane attended by over 2 000 fans.

‘Big Fish’ decided to honour his Swazi heritage by partly wearing the Swazi traditional regalia (lihiya) over his suit during his performance on Saturday night.

The experienced musician was performing at the Ebenezer Concert in England at Piccadilly Banqueting suite in Birmingham. The gospel mogul was invited by International Events Organiser, Timothy Ngwenya, to perform in England to cater for the number of African nationals who now reside in the United Kingdom. Makhabane came with his full band including his new Big Fish Music signee saxophone artist Denzel Erasmus and MTN Joyous Celebration member, vocalist Phindile Phoky.

Speaking about his performance and why he decided to take the stage partly draped in a Swazi lihiya over his suit, Makhabane said he was all about embracing his heritage.

“I remembered that it was Heritage Day in South Africa and I had to honour my Swazi roots when I got on that stage. I was thrilled to perform for the over 2 000 people who came out to support us. To see Swazis, Tanzanians, Nigerians and British nationals dancing and even singing along to my songs was humbling,” said Makhabane.

Among the songs that he performed were the popular ‘Ebenezer’, ‘Devil is a liar’, ‘He brought me this far’, ‘Thela Umoya, ‘Zawa Indonga’, and many more. “I was impressed with how even the British nationals follow my music, as even with the Zulu songs they knew the beats well well, though they struggled in pronouncing the words,” he added.
