The many shades of Dior

The biggest surprise of the new Rouge Dior line-up is a dark blue that brings to mind the 1965 slogan "You can dare with Dior". Creative director Peter Philips further made it a standout extreme matte finish emphasising the edgy side of the French luxury brand.

Besides the rebellious blue called Visionary, the extreme matte shades include the black-red Poison, purple Superstitious and grey Montaigne.

Philips' reinventions place Rouge Dior in a new era with the ultra-matte and satin finishes.

When the iconic lipstick came out in 1953, it was a limited edition of eight shades inspired by haute couture fabrics. Christian Dior's intention was "to dress women's smiles" with a true red that would live up to "Trafalgar coups", as he called the scarlet dresses displayed at his runway shows.

The new collection's four it-shades pay tribute to the fashion house's history. Dior's seminal 999 red has been reinvented with a matte texture worn by Praya Lundberg at the launch last Tuesday, at Siam Paragon Beauty Hall.

"For me, a red lipstick is a perfect match with a black dress to make me confidently feel good," said the sexy star while referring to Rouge Dior's feel-good femininity concept.

As for the other three it-shades, 060 Premiere is an easy-to-wear rosewood; Miss, a vibrant fuchsia; and 080 Red Smile, the satiny red that drapes Natalie Portman's lips in the advertising campaign.
