SASTRA University emerges winners in art, cultural festival

A musical concert by Bollywood composers Sachin and Jigar brought the curtains down on ‘Festember 2016,’ the 42nd three-day inter-collegiate art and cultural festival hosted by National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NITT) on Sunday.

SASTRA University of Thanjavur was declared overall winners with 152 points and awarded the Ilayaraja Rolling Shield and RECAL Cup for overall championship. NITT was the runner-up with 121 points.

The last leg of Festember started with the English literary events. The intense ‘Lone Wolf Quiz’, began early on Sunday morning and ended at 9 a.m.

The preliminary and final rounds of the game ‘What’s the Good Word?’ were held next, with IIT-Madras emerging the winner. India Quiz and debate were also held.

Tamil literary events included the finals of ‘Kalakkal Galatta’, conducted in Barn Hall. The judges for this event were YouTube stars Temple Monkeys.

‘Kuch Na Kaho’ made participants play Dumb Charades in Hindi. Cash prizes of Rs. 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 were given to winners of first, second and third place respectively.

Face-painting and mask-making were a big hit with students while live photography received a good response from amateur and professional photographers.

Eastern music bands battled it out in the final round of ‘Tarangini’, with 11 groups getting shortlisted by musician-judges Arvind Bhargav and Siddhartha Ramanathan. Bands ‘Project Mishram’ and ‘Unison’ won the first and second place respectively. The winning team was awarded Rs. 15,000.

Histrionics came to the fore in ‘Theatrix,’ a drama competition that took place from8 a.m. to 4 p.m. SASTRA University won the first place with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. Ten shortlisted candidates participated in ‘Fashionitas,’ a fashion show for students. Festember’s Day 3 also packed in a wide range of workshops in tango, hip-hop (held by Ravi Varma and B-Fab crew). Bartending experts Yuvaraj and Bharath conducted classes on making mocktails. Roller-skating, card-throwing, mind-reading, graffiti, and kendo workshops were also held on Day 3.

Writer and playwright Mahesh Dattani was the final speaker at the ‘Carpe Diem’ guest lecture series. Musician Sid Sriram, adman Suresh Triveni and Carnatic vocalist S. Sowmya were the other speakers in the event.

Among the highlights of the events on September 23 and 24 were the electrifying performance of the New York-based female band Guns ‘n’ Hoses as part of ‘Rock Night’ and ‘Acappella’ and ‘Acoustics’ .
