Mumbai: Woman succumbs to dengue, teen dies of leptospirosis infection

The Vikhroli-based woman first developed fever on September 3, and was admitted 10 days later to Sion Hospital.

A young woman from Vikhroli succumbed to dengue within 20 days of first developing symptoms after suffering a multi-organ failure in Sion Hospital. On the same day, an 18-year-old boy from Jankalyan Nagar died due to leptospirosis infection.

According to the civic health department, 296 confirmed dengue and 30 confirmed leptospirosis cases were recorded this month. However, suspected dengue cases have touched 3,287 in BMC hospitals and clinics. The Vikhroli-based woman first developed fever on September 3, and was admitted 10 days later to Sion Hospital.

On September 21, she suffered an acute respiratory distress syndrome and multi-organ failure due to the virus. The civic officials surveyed about 550 houses near her home and referred at least three persons with fever to a BMC dispensary for tests.

The teenager, from M East ward, however entered a critical condition within a week of developing fever. He had waded through waterlogged areas during Ganpati festival and is suspected to have caught the infection from there.

According to the doctors, the boy was admitted to Sion Hospital on September 17 and suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome due to the leptospira bacteria.
