Rishra: In a stern message to partymen irrespective of their ranks, Trinamool Congress on Monday removed Rishra Municipality chairman Sankar Prasad Shaw and his deputy Sakir Ali for their alleged involvement in several extortion and corruption cases. The move came following party supremo Mamata Banerjee's directive to take a zero-tolerance stand towards errant workers.
Since 2013, complaints of extortion and illegal pond filling kept piling up against Shaw and Ali.
It was also alleged that the duo gave shelter to notorious criminals. After this year's assembly elections, Mamata had asked urban development minister Firhad Hakim to probe these complaints. Last week, the minister reportedly told the CM that the allegations were just the tip of the iceberg and both were involved in much graver offences. Accordingly, the CM asked Hooghly Trinamool president Tapan Dasgupta to take strong action against Shaw and Ali.
"The duo resigned after I conveyed the CM's message to them. The name of the new chairman will be announced on October 2. Investigations into similar complaints against chairmen of other four municipalities in Hooghly are on. The CM's action will send out a message to Trinamool leaders across the state," Dasgupta said.
"My party has asked me to resign and I complied. I won't say anything more to the media," Shaw said. In his reaction, Ali added, "Allegations were levelled against me since I was in power. I have now stepped down but won't leave Trinamool."
