Nitish wants JD(U) members to help enforce prohibition
Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar has said democracy “boli se chalta hai, goli se nahi (democracy runs through voice, not bullets)”, and called upon JD (U) workers to give voice to the poor and the deprived so that their grievances are properly heard by the authorities concerned.
Addressing the party’s state council meeting at Rabindra Bhavan here on Monday, Kumar said the JD (U) supporters, who generally hail from deprived classes, hardly raise their voice.
“In democracy, if you don’t raise your voice loudly, chances are you will not be heard,” he said and exhorted the partymen to go to villages and teach the poor how to raise their voice.
Seeking support of around 1.5 lakh active party workers in enforcement of prohibition and implementation of the Grand Alliance government’s ‘Saat Nishchay’ (seven resolves) programme, Kumar said enforcing prohibition would not be possible without the society’s active support. “Law has its own limitations. Prohibition will not succeed only through law. It is a social campaign. The society will have to act. You will have to work for awareness among the masses,” he told the party workers.
Kumar asked each panchayat and ward unit of JD(U) to organise ‘prabhat pheri’ and ‘sankalp sabha’ in their respective panchayat and ward on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 to inform people about the positive aspects of prohibition.
“All panchayat and ward units will take out a ‘prabhat pheri’ in the morning and hold a ‘sankalp sabha’ in the afternoon, where villagers will take a pledge not to allow anyone to indulge in trade or consumption of liquor,” the CM said.
Kumar also asked the workers to effectively counter the false propaganda against prohibition being spread by a few “educated and prosperous persons” who were deprived of their quota of liquor post prohibition.
