Xabi Alonso believes he will end his glittering professional career with current club Bayern Munich - despite retaining an interest in playing in Serie A.

The 34-year-old midfielder is a two-time Champions League winner who was also part of the Spain teams that secured a brace of European Championships either side of a World Cup triumph.

But the former Liverpool and Real Madrid man admits his playing days are drawing to a close and while he would embrace the challenge of trying his luck in the Italian top-flight, he thinks he will bow out with Bayern.

Asked whether Bayern would be his last club, he told Marca: "I think so. While my mind and body can bear it, I want to keep playing at the elite level and that will be at Bayern.

"I do not think there is another step for me in senior football. I would go to Italy, but there is not time to give myself there."

Alonso's contract with the Bavarian giants expires at the end of the season and he was reluctant to divulge whether his deal would be extended.

"I have not yet decided," he added. "As the months pass I will go slowly, taking one direction or another.

"I'll see what I just feel or whether the club want to continue with me or take another path. I don't know what I would do, time will tell.

"I have the freedom to decide and I do not set deadlines."
