AGRA: Aligarh police have registered cases under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 504 (intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC against 5 doctors of the varsity’s JN Medical College in connection with the death of BTech final year student, Sabir Hussain, who died Sunday, after being admitted for treatment for suspected dengue.
The deceased’s father, Akbar Hussain, had filed the police complaint, alleging negligence of the doctors, on Sundayevening and the FIR was registered around midnight against Dr MMK Ashraf, Dr A Parvez, Dr Sameer, Dr Sushil and Dr Deepak.
Before the registration of the FIR, AMU’s Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah, had suspended a Junior Resident, Dr Sushil Kumar, and nurse, Valentina Sherring, after the three-member committee formed by the varsity submitted its preliminary findings, indicating negligence on the part of the duo. The committee is yet to submit its detailed report.
According to the FIR, Hussain was admitted to ward Nos 11 of the hospital on Saturday at 8:50 am. Though his condition was serious, the doctors did not start his treatment, despite requests from some students who were accompanying him. The FIR states that though the test reports had confirmed that Hussain was suffering from dengue, the doctors ignored him for 24 hours, leading to his death. The FIR also states that the doctors misbehaved with Hussain’s friends, who were pestering them for his treatment.
When contacted CMO emergency, JN Medical College, Dr Zaidi said though the final report of the committee would be submitted tomorrow, prima facie “gross misconduct” has been found on the part of junior resident doctor and nurse. He refused to comment on the registration of FIR against the others. Incidentally, the deceased’s father had also filed a complaint with the university authorities against the entire unit of ward 11, including its Consultant SMK Ashraf, Prof. A Parvez, Dr Sameer, Dr Sushil and Dr Deepak. The varsity subsequently formed a three-member committee to inquire into the matter but suspended only a junior doctor and a nurse.
On Monday morning, several AMU students took out a peaceful march on the campus in Hussain’s memory and demanded compensation for his family, besides action against the guilty doctors.
