Sandra Taylor cheated on her husband Matthew, left, with Ivan Mascarenhas, right

Ivan Mascarenhas, 49, moved in with Matthew and Sandra Taylor, who have been married for 29 years.

Rev Taylor, of St Mary’s in Rushden in Northamptonshire, took pity on him and kindly gave him the spare room.

But his relationship with Mrs Taylor quickly escalated “like a fantasy” after they bonded over long walks.

When the vicar and his wife found Mr Mascarenhas a place in rehab house Recovery House, managed by Mrs Taylor, she would send him messages and arrange to have sex with him.

He said: ”We'd fallen in love. We just couldn't stop. Of course it was wrong, and the fact we are both Christian made it even worse. Matthew was a friend, which makes me feel terrible about it.”

He was invited to stay with the vicar when he was chucked out of the family home for his alcoholism.

Mother-of-two Mrs Taylor now feels “shame and sadness” about the affair, her husband said and has quit her post at Recovery House.

Rev Taylor said: “During a time of great and intense emotional loss and stress, my wife Sandra was drawn into an inappropriate relationship with Ivan Mascarenhas while he was a voluntary member living in one of the rehab's dry houses.

”It was a short relationship which is now ended and for which Sandra now feels great shame and sadness.

“She resigned immediately having realised the seriousness of the situation. Ivan has left the house and a flat has now been arranged for him in a different location.”

A diocese spokesman added: “We are committed to supporting Matt and Sandra as they rebuild their marriage.”
