The Ras Al Khaimah police slapped fines on 4,769 drivers in just one week, for traffic violations at different roads in the northern emirate.
Top infractions in these 7 days were breaking speed limits, lane violations, and jumping red signals, said a senior RAK police officer.
Brigadier Hassan Ibrahim Ali, deputy director general of the RAK police Central Operations Room, said the drivers were nabbed during inspection campaigns all over the emirate.
"These inspection campaigns done on a regular basis are to curb road accidents and casualties, boost traffic flow, ensure road users' safety, and develop an accident-free environment," said Brig Ali.
Putting down road rules
In just one day - on Tuesday last week - the RAK police issued 31 tickets against erring drivers and impounded 8 vehicles for flouting set rules. "Fifteen drivers were also advised to observe the traffic regulations," said Brig Ali,.
The tougher unified traffic law with higher fines and a black points system enacted in 2008 all over the UAE, erring motorists can be penalised with up to 24 black points, after which they lose their driving license.
Driving callously costs the erring driver Dh2,000, 12 black points, and vehicle impoundment for 30 days. Not carrying a driving license or using the horn unnecessarily draws a fine of Dh100.
The fines have been integrated in the unified federal traffic system across the country. "Erring drivers can pay their fines at any emirate's traffic department."
